The three-year program represents a unique and exciting opportunity for clinical faculty to acquire multidisciplinary training that will enable them to conduct health services and population health/health disparities research that will impact clinical policy and practice on the local and national levels. In the first year, selected faculty take graduate coursework at VCU, develop a mentorship team of VCU experts in their chosen area of research, and combine clinical activities with research methods training.
The academic component of the program emphasizes research question development and grant writing skills. The program provides a stipend for travel, computer equipment and other supplies. Trainees are expected to devote 30% effort to research activities.
Eligible applicants must hold a Ph.D. or M.D. degree and be an employee at VCU. Trainees must have legal authority to work: citizens and nationals of the United States, lawful permanent residents, and aliens authorized to work. Successful applicants are required to submit proof of citizenship or permanent resident status prior to beginning the Clinical Faculty Scholars program. Individuals from groups traditionally underrepresented in research and academia are strongly encouraged to apply. We particularly encourage applications from faculty with research interests related to health disparities, maternal and child health and cancer.
Interested applicants should apply using the online application and will need to submit: 1) a recent curriculum vitae including previous research experience, 2) a research statement describing the reason for seeking research training and their specific interests, 3) two general letters of recommendation plus a third letter of support from their Department Chair, 4) Personal statement. Applications open on November 1 and the priority deadline is June 14. However, applications are reviewed until recruitment is complete.
