Laboratory Boot Camp - 2022

Molecular Lab Skills Boot Camp

9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Trani Life Sciences Building (1000 W. Cary St) room 221

The HERO-T Research Boot Camp is a three day workshop in science for high school teachers aimed at increasing the teacher’s content knowledge and proficiency in scientific research. Each day consist of content knowledge and hands-on laboratory skills aimed at improving teacher effectiveness. We will explore several educational based research modules that can be incorporated into high school science curriculum.

Course Description:

HERO-T fellows will experience one week in a teaching laboratory tackling some of the everyday tasks faced in a molecular biology research setting. Topics will include laboratory safety, laboratory etiquette, and standard curve generation for determining unknown concentrations. We will work through an extended experiment exploring the drug process from manufacturing to approval by the Food Drug and Administration (FDA). Other experiments include exposure to DNA forensics analysis by gel electrophoresis, DNA transformation, and exploring protein analysis by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Fellows will leave this course having acquired knowledge and comprehension of laboratory skills, and feeling more prepared and confident about entering research laboratories.
